Time to Learn

This term as part of our maths strand learning  we are focusing on time.  Already this term we have tried to judge the length of a minute, and compared time and measured time using non-standard units.

Activities we have taken part in include finding out whether it took longer to build a tower using 10 blocks or write our name 10 times, hop 10 times or do 10 star jumps etc.  We have also estimated time by completing a task once and then estimating how long it would take to do the same task 3 times - this included taking off and putting it back on and reading one page of a book.

A couple of weeks ago we became a human clock as we started to learn about the hands of the clock, past and to the hour, what each number stood for etc.  First we drew a circle (it took a couple of attempts!) and then we positioned students around the circle as the numbers.  Then two students became the hour and minute hand and I asked them, with the help of the rest of the students, where they should be pointing.

Rihana and Isla show 3 o'clock.

Mayer and Tessa show 10.35

Lola and Matthew show half past 12.

Last week we made our own clocks with moveable hands, and this week we are using our clocks to help us to read and draw clocks showing o'clock, quarter past, half past and quarter to times.
