Speech Finals

After hearing the last 6 of our class speeches yesterday I was faced with the difficult task of deciding who to put forward to represent Room 20 in the Speech Finals.

There were so many good choices, some students had presented their speeches confidently and clearly, some were a little shyer but had great subject matter.  It was a close call but I picked Indie, Matthew and Nicolo as our top three, with Paige and Tessa tying for fourth place.

I gave them all their speeches back and some words of advice so they could practice on Thursday night ready for the big day.

After morning tea today all the Year 3's gathered in Room 21.  Our three independent judges were Mrs Hills, Miss Haywood and Charlotte from Room 4 who was the Senior school speech winner.

There were some very interesting speeches with topics including Cats, Star Wars, Feet, and Being a Twin as well as Indie's speech on 'Tigers', Matthew's speech on 'Sharks' and Nicolo's speech on 'Why you wouldn't want to be a Gladiator'!

Indie, Nicolo and Matthew did really well speaking clearly, at a good pace, using expression and actions.
Nicolo ready to start.

Our judges - Charlotte, Mrs Hills, Miss Haywood

While we waited for the judges to make their decision we went to expend some of our energy on the playground.  On our return we eagerly awaited the results..

Joint 3rd place went to Indie and Nicolo, in 2nd place was Matthew and 1st was Sophie from Room 21.

Wow, all our finalists finished in the top three - great work guys!

I am really proud of the whole class for their effort in writing their speeches and their bravery in standing up to present them.  Well done everyone - ka pai!
Matthew comes 2nd!

Money, Money, Money!

This week in maths we have been learning about money.  We started by brainstorming what we know about money - the notes and coins and what they are made from, how we get money, what we spend money on, where we keep money etc.

Then we talked about pocket money and surveyed our friends in class asking whether we got pocket money, whether we saved or spent it, how much we got, and whether we had to do chores to earn the money.

We have learned to identify the coins that are used in New Zealand and how we can use the different coins to make different amounts of money.  The Squares and Circles group worked with me to find all the different ways we could make $1.  Here are the ways we came up with.

Finally today I set each group a task.  They each had a different budget and a different scenario and had to come up with a menu to suit the occasion without going over.

The Triangle group had $40 to spend on food and drinks for a kids party.  The Squares group had $50 to spend on a picnic lunch for a family of 4.  The Circles group had $50 to spend on a romantic meal for 2 including a main course, pudding and dessert. The Hexagons group had $75 to spend on a family meal for 5 people, and the Diamonds group had $100 to spend on a fancy / special meal for 4 adults.

Each group was given 2 supermarket mailers, a big sheet with their scenario written on, glue sticks, scissors, a pen, and a calculator.  They had to cut out and stick on the sheet the food they wanted to include.

After 25 minutes I gathered the groups back together and we went over each menu and worked out whether they had come in on, under or over budget.  Each group did a great job and I was really impressed with how they worked together.

60th Anniversary Celebration

What a fantastic day we had on Wednesday for Torbay's 60th Anniversary celebration.  It was lovely to have some family members come and join us in the morning and watch our learning.  Then after lunch it was our special outside assembly.

The Kapa Haka, Pasifik and Fan Dance groups performed for the school as did the amazing Birthday Band.  Mrs Sandifer and Mr Baird, a former school principal, both talked about their time at Torbay and the changes that had happened over the years.

Finally we had a school photo taken by Mr Wheaton who bravely climbed up onto the roof to take the shot.

The assembly also marked the start of our Art and Writing Exhibition which is open before and after school and over the weekend between 1 and 3pm.  Do come and have a look around as there are some fantastic pieces of art and writing. We also have a room telling the story of Torbay School.

Speeches

Over the last few weeks the students have been busy at home and in class deciding upon a speech topic, researching their topic and writing their speeches.

Yesterday we started presenting the speeches in class.  All the students wrote their names on pieces of paper and then they were put into a hat and we drew two names out at a time.  The first person drawn our gave their speech while their buddy filled in a peer assessment form marking them on criteria including, "Show that the speech has been researched and practiced" through to "Speak clearly" and "Use cue cards correctly".  Then the students swapped roles before the next two names were drawn out of the hat.

There was a fantastic range of topics from dogs to tigers, sharks to Sylvanian families.  The speeches contained lots of interesting facts, humour and personal opinion and I was very impressed.

We will hear the last speeches today and then tomorrow three or four representatives will give their speech again in front of the whole of year three in our "Speech Finals".

Here are a few photos from yesterday, I will update the blog with details of how we get on in the finals later in the week.

Writing and Art Exhibition

Over the last couple of weeks the students have been busy designing, drawing, creating and colouring their puppet art for the exhibition, and they are looking amazing!

Our writing is based around the book we have been reading in class - "Gangsta Granny" by David Walliams.  Be prepared to read about lots of daring crimes, dastardly villains and sparkling jewels!

Here's a little taster of some of the amazing writing that is being finished off this week in class:

"Creak, creak went the floorboards.  The greedy robber silently walked to the jewel room, jewels sparkled in his eyes."

"The police cars pulled up beside Barry.  An officer hopped out of the police car and said in a deep voice, “You’re in big trouble Mister.” "

"When the guards fell asleep we sneaked in and broke the locker,  “YAY THIS IS AWESOME!” shouted Mayer. "

"Later he had a search around the houses for some valuable items.  He had found some diamonds, emeralds, golden ingots, bottles of enchantments, swords and armour. Then he was gone."

In fact the writing has been so good, we've had to call in Torbay School's Writing Police... I wonder what could be going on?

Turbo Touch

We are very lucky to currently be having several sessions of Turbo Touch provided by the coaches of Kiwisport.

Last Wednesday Rooms 20 and 21 joined up for our first session.  The coaches put the students through a warm up where they had to run around and then get into groups of a certain number that were randomly called out.  Numbers ranged from one (so anyone who immediately grabbed another student were out!) up to nine - which involved a lot of counting and recounting.

After the warm up the students were split into boys and girls groups and the coaches ran through the pitch set up, explaining the boundaries and scoring zones.  Soon the students were facing off against each other with one student trying to score in the end zone and the other trying to tag them.

After a few goes the students were paired up and then two students had to complete one pass before trying to score.  A few turns later it was a group of students having to complete 2 and 3 passes before scoring.

It was a beautiful day to be outside and the students really enjoyed the games, with many showing a real talent for dodging past their opponents and scoring or defending their zone.

We have three more sessions to complete, one on Wednesday of this week and then a session on each of the following two Thursdays.  I will update you on our future rugby stars then!

Time to Learn

This term as part of our maths strand learning  we are focusing on time.  Already this term we have tried to judge the length of a minute, and compared time and measured time using non-standard units.

Activities we have taken part in include finding out whether it took longer to build a tower using 10 blocks or write our name 10 times, hop 10 times or do 10 star jumps etc.  We have also estimated time by completing a task once and then estimating how long it would take to do the same task 3 times - this included taking off and putting it back on and reading one page of a book.

A couple of weeks ago we became a human clock as we started to learn about the hands of the clock, past and to the hour, what each number stood for etc.  First we drew a circle (it took a couple of attempts!) and then we positioned students around the circle as the numbers.  Then two students became the hour and minute hand and I asked them, with the help of the rest of the students, where they should be pointing.

Rihana and Isla show 3 o'clock.

Mayer and Tessa show 10.35

Lola and Matthew show half past 12.

Last week we made our own clocks with moveable hands, and this week we are using our clocks to help us to read and draw clocks showing o'clock, quarter past, half past and quarter to times.

Music and Dance

This term for the class CRT time Mrs Dawe has been teaching the students music and dance.  They have been learning to play the ukulele.  In this session they went back over what they had previously learnt and then learnt how to play the c and f chord and practised a few songs together.

Then they listened and danced to a song called Jazzy Jive which had some movements that went with the chorus as well as a part which they had to improvise to. They all came up with 4 different moves worth 8 beats each and an end pose. Mrs Dawe said everyone did a fabulous job keeping in time with the beat
